Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Macro Lens for Newborn Photography

WOW! I’m so impressed!

Today I want to share my latest purchase — my new love, the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Macro lens for the Canon RF mount.

Why Did I Choose Laowa Instead of Canon, Nikon or Sigma?

I wanted a 2x macro lens with the RF mount.

I needed the lens only for macro work (for everything else, I already have amazing lenses!).

Budget was critical — the Laowa lens costs only around 500 USD.

Before buying, I watched several reviews — and all of them were 5 stars ⭐.
The only thing to know is that this lens is fully manual:

- You need to adjust focus manually.

- You also set the aperture manually.

- Your camera can’t read it correctly — on the screen the F-value shows as “F00.”

But don’t be scared of that at all! It’s actually fun to adjust the lens for your own needs, just like in the early days of photography.

Tips for Using a Macro Lens in Newborn Photoshoots

Avoid f/2.8 for close-ups. It’s too wide. Close the aperture to at least f/4.5–5.6.

Don’t be afraid of high ISO. It’s better to keep sharp details than worry about noise.

Light placement matters. Place the light opposite to your lens (photograph against the light).

Take multiple shots of the same detail. Better to overshoot than to miss something unique.

My Favorite Close-up Shots

1) Little hair swirl on the forehead.

2) Eyelashes (best photographed from the head side to show each lash).

3) Nose.

4) Mouth.

5) Nose + mouth together.

6) Belly button.

7) Baby rolls and folds (especially if the baby is chubby 🥰).

8) Tiny fingers holding mama’s finger.

9) Toes against the light.

10) Toes in mama’s hands.

                                                                       Final Thoughts

The Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2:1 Macro has proven itself to be a perfect lens for newborn photography.
It beautifully captures all those tiny details we never want to miss 💛.
